NJC News   Mike Hadaway Joins NJC Board Monday June 27, 2011   NJC Chairman Brian Reardon has welcomed the appointment of Mike Hadaway to the club’s Board. Mr Reardon announced today that the Board had decided to appoint Mr Hadaway to replace the late John Cleaves, who stood down at the end of April. Mr Cleaves, who was the club’s vice-chairman when he retired, passed away earlier this month. Mr Reardon said Mr Hadaway was a welcome addition to the NJC Board. “Mike is a racing man and we look forward to his input,” Mr Reardon said. Hadaway, 47, joined Newcastle Jockey Club in May, 2006 and is well-known in Newcastle sporting circles. He is the NSW Regional protective Services Operations Manager for SNP Security. “I am privileged to have been appointed to the NJC Board; it’s a terrific honour,” Hadaway said today. “ Though I have been a member for only five years, I have been coming to the races at Broadmeadow since I was knee high to a grasshopper and raced a number of horses over the last four or five years,” Hadaway said. “My best horse was Miss Shalaquing, who won six races from 21 starts. “Currently, I am involved in the ownership of a two-year-old Starsign Miss with trainer Alan Scorse.”   Geoffrey Barnett Elected as Vice-Chairman 28/05/2011   PROMINENT Newcastle businessman Geoff Barnett has been appointed vice-chairman of Newcastle Jockey Club. Mr Barnett has been a member of the NJC Board of Directors since 1999, and was elected unanimously to the position at last Friday’s monthly meeting. He replaces John Cleaves, who retired from the Board at the end of April. Mr Barnett, who is managing director of locally-based company Minco Tech Australia, also holds two other important positions in the NSW racing industry. He is chairman of the Provincial Racing Association of NSW (of which Newcastle is one of five member clubs) and vice-chairman of RICG (Racing Industry Consultative Group), which reports to governing body RacingNSW. Mr Barnett, in accepting his new role at the NJC, said the racing industry in New South Wales was going through tough times at present. “We have to be extremely vigilant in keeping costs in line and at the same time continue to attract revenue from non-wagering sources to ensure the viability of our operations,” he said. “Critical to all of this, of course, is the ongoing racefields legislation case.
